Addressing multiple treatment episodes

PCP Addiction Treatment

Wellbridge provides medically supervised PCP addiction treatment for adults who are dealing with phencyclidine use, dissociative episodes and the mental health conditions that often sit underneath them.

Our team on Long Island handles detox, residential care and step-down outpatient support in one place, so you are not transferred between providers during the hardest weeks. We are in-network with most major insurance plans, and our admissions team can verify your benefits confidentially before you commit to anything.

How We Treat PCP Addiction

PCP (also called angel dust, sherm, wet or embalming fluid) is an NMDA receptor antagonist, which is why intoxication produces dissociation, distorted perception and, in some cases, agitation or violent behavior. There is no FDA-approved medication for phencyclidine use disorder, so effective PCP rehab is built on medical stabilization followed by behavioral therapy.

Our pathway moves in a set order:

  • Clinical assessment: a psychiatric and medical evaluation using DSM-5-TR criteria for phencyclidine use disorder, plus screening for polysubstance use.
  • Medically supervised detox: monitoring, hydration and off-label medication for agitation, typically benzodiazepines rather than first-generation antipsychotics such as haloperidol, which carries added risk during PCP intoxication.
  • Residential or outpatient therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Contingency Management, the two approaches with the strongest evidence for stimulant and dissociative use disorders.
  • Aftercare planning: relapse prevention, sober living referrals, and both 12-step and non-12-step community support.

PCP Detox and Withdrawal: What to Expect

Most patients arrive still intoxicated or within a day of last use, and the first 72 hours of PCP detox are about medical safety rather than therapy. Our nursing staff checks vitals, temperature and hydration on a set schedule because hyperthermia, dangerously high blood pressure and rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown that can damage the kidneys) are the complications that turn a bad night into an emergency.

Common PCP withdrawal symptoms include intense cravings, agitation, depression, confusion, memory problems, twitching and disrupted sleep. Acute symptoms usually settle within three to seven days, though low mood and cognitive fog can linger for several weeks. Supervision matters here because agitation and disorientation raise the risk of self-injury.

Our Accreditations and Licensure

Signs of PCP Use Families Notice First

Families often call us before the person does, usually after a frightening episode.

The signs of PCP use we hear described most often are:

  • Blank staring, rapid involuntary eye movement and a numb, robotic gait
  • Slurred speech, garbled thinking or apparent detachment from the body
  • Sudden agitation, paranoia or unusual physical strength during a panic state
  • Sweating, higher temperature and a chemical or solvent smell on clothing

PCP Psychosis and Co-Occurring Conditions

Psychotic symptoms from PCP can outlast the drug itself, persisting for days or occasionally weeks after toxicology clears, which changes the treatment plan significantly. Our psychiatric team screens every patient for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD and other substance use, then treats both conditions together rather than sequentially. Dual diagnosis care is the difference between stabilizing someone and actually reducing the odds of the next episode.

Levels of Care: Inpatient or Outpatient

We place patients using ASAM criteria, which weigh withdrawal risk, medical status, psychiatric stability and the recovery environment. Residential care runs 24 hours a day for a typical 30, 60 or 90 days. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides roughly 25 to 30 structured hours per week, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) runs 9 to 15 hours, and standard outpatient is a few hours weekly.

Inpatient is usually the right starting point when there is active psychosis, a history of relapse after outpatient attempts, heavy polysubstance use, unstable housing or anyone at home who is also using.

The tranquil setting along with the great clinical care makes helping your loved one that much easier. What PCP Rehab Costs and How Insurance Works

Out-of-pocket costs vary widely by level of care, but as a general range, medical detox often runs $500 to $1,500 per day, residential treatment $18,000 to $40,000 for a 30-day stay, PHP $350 to $700 per day and IOP $250 to $500 per day. Because we are in-network with most major carriers, many patients pay only a deductible and coinsurance, and federal parity law requires most plans to cover substance use care comparably to medical care. SAMHSA also maintains a free national helpline if you need a second opinion on options.

To verify benefits, have the insurance card, the policyholder’s date of birth and a short summary of recent use ready. Our admissions staff completes the check in about 15 minutes and explains deductibles, out-of-network reimbursement and payment plans before admission.

Help for Families During an Episode

If someone is acutely intoxicated, lower the stimulation in the room, keep lighting and voices calm, and avoid physical restraint by yourself, since struggle raises body temperature and muscle breakdown risk. Call 911 for seizures, chest pain, very high temperature, unresponsiveness or threats of harm. Once the person is medically stable, we bring families into intervention support, family therapy and boundary-setting work that continues after discharge.

Getting Admitted: First Call to Day One

Our admissions line is staffed around the clock. A phone screening takes about 20 minutes, insurance verification follows immediately, and we confirm a bed and arrange transportation from anywhere in the New York City metro area. Many patients are admitted the same day or the next morning. Bring identification, insurance cards, current medications in original bottles and a week of comfortable clothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a holistic approach to addiction?

A holistic approach treats five domains at once: physical health, mental health, emotional regulation, relationships and purpose. It runs alongside detox, therapy and medication rather than replacing them, which is the main thing people misunderstand.

What is the most successful treatment for addiction?

For opioid and alcohol use disorder, medication-assisted treatment combined with behavioral therapy has the strongest outcome data, cutting overdose deaths substantially. Adding holistic supports like mindfulness, exercise and nutrition improves retention and quality of life, which matters because time in treatment predicts results.

What is an example of a holistic treatment?

Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention is a clear example: an eight-session protocol that teaches you to observe cravings without acting on them. Yoga, acupuncture using the NADA ear protocol, nutrition therapy and equine therapy are others we offer.

Is holistic rehab covered by insurance?

Yes, when the clinical portion is medically necessary, most plans cover it at the same benefit level as any other rehab. Complementary services such as massage are the pieces most often excluded, and we tell you which is which before admission.
