Women Addiction Treatment
Wellbridge provides women addiction treatment on a private 100-acre campus in Calverton, New York, about 75 miles east of Manhattan and reachable from the five boroughs in under two and a half hours. Our clinical team treats substance use and the trauma, anxiety and depression that so often sit underneath it, in groups made up only of women. Our admissions line is staffed 24 hours a day, and a benefits check takes about ten minutes.
What Makes Our Women’s Treatment Program Different
A single-gender program is not simply a mixed-gender program with the men removed. Research summarized by SAMHSA shows that women tend to progress from first use to dependence faster than men, arrive with higher rates of interpersonal trauma, and face different barriers to entering care, particularly childcare and custody fears.
Our gender-specific treatment model reflects that in the clinical schedule, not just the housing assignment. Women in our program attend groups on intimate partner violence, body image and disordered eating, motherhood and shame, and relational recovery that are not offered in our co-ed track.
- Female clinicians lead the core process groups, with medical and nursing coverage available 24/7
- Universal screening for domestic violence, sexual trauma and safety planning at intake
- Trauma-informed policies on room checks, searches and medical exams
- Peer groups where discussing abuse or a CPS case does not mean doing it in front of men
Levels of Care We Offer
Placement follows the ASAM Criteria, which match a woman to a level of care based on withdrawal risk, medical status, co-occurring conditions and her recovery environment. Most women move down the continuum in steps rather than stopping care abruptly.
- Medical detox: typically 3 to 10 days, with 24-hour nursing for alcohol, benzodiazepine and opioid withdrawal
- Residential women drug rehab: usually 21 to 45 days, the right fit when home is unsafe or use has resumed after outpatient attempts
- Partial hospitalization (PHP): about 5 to 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 2 to 4 weeks
- Intensive outpatient (IOP): 9 to 12 hours weekly, often evenings, for 8 to 12 weeks
- Outpatient and medication management: weekly or biweekly, continuing for months
We deliver detox and residential care on campus and coordinate PHP, IOP and outpatient placement through our aftercare network before discharge.
Trauma, Mental Health and Co-Occurring Condition
Treating the drinking or the drug use alone leaves the driver in place, which is why untreated trauma is one of the most common reasons a woman relapses within the first 90 days. Our psychiatric providers evaluate and treat PTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorders and borderline personality disorder alongside substance use.
Clinical modalities include EMDR, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive processing therapy and the Seeking Safety curriculum, which was designed specifically for concurrent PTSD and substance use. Medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine, naltrexone or acamprosate is available when indicated, including during pregnancy under obstetric supervision.
Motherhood, Pregnancy and Family Care
Fear of losing custody keeps more women out of women’s alcohol treatment than cost does, and our team addresses it directly rather than waiting for it to surface in week three. We help arrange childcare coverage, coordinate with attorneys and caseworkers, and document participation for child welfare or family court when a client authorizes it.
Children do not stay on campus, but structured family visitation and family therapy sessions begin once a client is medically stable, generally in the second week. For pregnant clients, we coordinate prenatal care with a local OB, manage medication safely, and prepare families for neonatal abstinence syndrome monitoring after delivery.
Insurance, Cost and Time Off Work
Wellbridge is in-network with most major commercial carriers, including Aetna, Cigna, Empire BlueCross BlueShield and UnitedHealthcare/Oxford, and we bill out-of-network benefits as well. Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, addiction benefits cannot carry stricter limits than medical or surgical benefits on the same plan.
Self-pay residential stays typically run between $25,000 and $45,000 for a 28-day program nationally, and we discuss exact figures and payment plans before admission. Most employees qualify for job-protected leave under the federal FMLA, and your records are protected by 42 CFR Part 2, a stricter confidentiality rule than HIPAA alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a women's only rehab different from a mixed-gender program?
The clinical curriculum differs, not just the population: our women’s track adds groups on trauma, parenting, body image and relational recovery that co-ed programming does not include. Women also disclose abuse histories earlier when men are not in the room, which shortens the time before trauma work can begin.
Does insurance cover women's addiction treatment?
Most commercial plans cover detox, residential and outpatient addiction care, and parity law prohibits stricter limits than those applied to medical care. Coverage amounts depend on deductible, network status and medical necessity criteria, so we verify benefits in writing before admission.
Can my children stay with me during treatment?
Children cannot reside on our campus, though supervised visitation and family therapy begin once a client is medically stable. Our case managers help arrange childcare, communicate with caseworkers and provide progress documentation for family court.
How long does inpatient treatment for women last?
Most residential stays run 21 to 45 days, following 3 to 10 days of medical detox when withdrawal management is needed. Length of stay is reviewed weekly against ASAM criteria and adjusted based on stability and co-occurring conditions.
Is treatment safe for women who are pregnant?
Yes, and stopping opioids or alcohol abruptly during pregnancy can be more dangerous than supervised treatment. We coordinate with an obstetrician, use pregnancy-appropriate medication protocols, and prepare the delivery hospital for newborn monitoring.
