Wellbridge Addiction Treatment and Research Appoints Harshal Kirane Medical Director
Campus Construction Continues To Be Ahead of Schedule
CALVERTON, NY – JUNE 5, 2019 – To continue to build one of the leading substance abuse recovery centers in the country, Wellbridge Addiction Treatment and Research (”Wellbridge”) today announced it has selected Harshal Kirane MD as its Medical Director. Wellbridge is a joint venture of Northwell Health, the largest healthcare provider in New York state, and Engel Burman, a full-service real estate firm and one of the largest developers of senior housing in New York State.
Dr. Kirane currently serves as the Director of Addiction Services at Staten Island University Hospital as well as Assistant Professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He joins Wellbridge as it prepares to open a new 80-bed center on 40 acres in Calverton, New York, this fall. With a focus on accelerating the translation of basic science discoveries into real-time, actionable addiction treatment, Wellbridge will be one of the first facilities to incorporate an onsite research center.
“We are thrilled to have such an experienced medical director join our team,” said Andrew Drazan, CEO and Co-Founder of Wellbridge. “Dr. Kirane’s knowledge of and impact on addiction treatment is exceptional and his extensive medical, psychiatric, and clinical background will be a major asset as we work toward becoming an epicenter for the treatment and study of addiction.”
Drazan added that construction of the new campus, which broke ground last October, continues to be ahead of schedule with the exterior of all five buildings completed and significant progress with the interior areas. Wellbridge has also been adding a wide range of additional positions to the organization including business development, finance, project management and marketing.
“Drug addiction has now become the deadliest public health crisis in recent U.S history,” commented Dr. Kirane. ”Our goal at Wellbridge, and the reason I’m so pleased to be joining the organization, is that it’s uniquely focused on developing innovative ways to address this crisis.
By design, Wellbridge will integrate research based on technological tools and informatics to develop new targeted approaches to distinct phases of addiction treatment and recovery. While there are many challenges involved with addressing our nation’s substance abuse crisis, Wellbridge is well positioned to be a guiding light for this extremely important work.”
Dr. Kirane completed a Bachelor of Science with honors at Texas Tech University and obtained his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School. He completed his psychiatry residency along with a research fellowship in brain imaging at UT Southwestern. Subsequently, Dr. Kirane moved to New York City to pursue an addiction psychiatry fellowship at New York University. He is board-certified in general and addiction psychiatry, and was named a ”Staten Island Health Hero” by the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation in 2018.
Wellbridge will be an epicenter for the study and treatment of addiction. Its focus is to advance the scientific and medical understanding of addiction, and incorporate research and treatment into one setting for quality care and improved outcomes. Wellbridge will work
